Product Description
Canon ELPH-SPORT KIT Ultra-Compact Underwater APS Camera

Amazon.com Product Description
Finally--an underwater camera that's small enough to take anywhere, yet advanced enough to give you high-quality results with easy operation. The Canon Elph Sport camera integrates Elph's crowd-pleasing Advanced Photo System ease of use and portability with a sporty waterproof body. Not only does it take pictures on land at the touch of a button, but it is submersible to 16.4 feet for underwater photography. It's a good bet for vacations, since you don't have to lug around a separate, clunky underwater camera in addition to your point-and-shoot. The Elph Sport easily fills both roles, offering signature Canon quality along with special features designed to make underwater shooting easier.

The Elph Sport features an extra large viewfinder that enables you to frame your shots even with dive goggles on. A special meniscus lens and underwater macro setting account for water's refractive properties and ensure crisp shots. Larger-format controls allow you to operate the Canon Elph Sport even when wearing gloves. Another highlight of this camera is the anticondensation feature that prevents your lens from fogging up in extreme temperatures or moist climates. The Canon Elph Sport also includes a five-mode flash with a special underwater setting and red-eye reduction. This camera uses autofocus on land and has user-selectable focus settings for underwater shooting.

The Canon Elph Sport also incorporates all of the basic features of an APS camera, including easy drop-in film loading, three shooting formats (classic, high-definition HDTV, and panorama), built-in date, time, and caption imprinting on the back of the photo, and print quality improvement (PQI).

Weighing only 7.8 ounces, this camera is so light it will float. It measures 4.1 by 2.9 by 1.8 inches--not much larger than a deck of cards. Its distinctive rounded, translucent green styling is a real eye-catcher. The kit includes a soft nylon case and a foam-rubber neck/wrist strap as well as a one-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal snorkeler's camera   December 11, 2000

I took this camera on my vacation to Hawaii, and was extremely pleased with it. The underwater pictures are excellent, much superior to those produced by disposable cameras. The flash is very helpful in underwater closeups, and the large viewfinder is helpful when peering through a mask. Above-water picture quality is quite good, though the lack of a telephoto option hurts. The camera is reasonably rugged--I dropped it from waist height onto asphalt twice, and it continues to function without a hitch. Although the manual advises that the loaded camera may not float in fresh water, mine floats in my bathroom sink, even with battery and film. I would add a couple of cautions--When film is removed, the camera sets the film to "exposed" so you can't re-insert the film to finish the roll as some APS cameras allow. This means changing from 100 ASA to 400 ASA film (for example) means sacrificing any remaining shots on the roll. The camera does require a minimum amount of cleaning and care after use, especially salt water use. Also, there is no lens cover, which makes me squeamish when packing the camera around. I haven't yet scratched the lens, but I often worry about it. Although a zoom lens is clearly not practical, it would certainly be nice to have a two-position lens with a regular setting and telephoto setting. Despite these quibbles, I really like the camera!

I have had this camera for a little over a year now, and it hasn't broken. For me this is saying a whole lot. I typically keep it in my backpack which goes everywhere with me. I have had beer spilled all over it at parties. Taken it to the beach. Slammed it against rocks hiking. Fallen on it skiing and it still hasn't broken. For an active 20yr old kid it can't be beat. I haven't had problems with indoor pictures as others have said. We also have used it to take pictures wakeboarding from a tube behind the boat. Where we discovered one more advantage....it floats

5 out of 5 stars Great vacation camera   November 26, 2000

I bought this camera specifically for vacationing with kids. It has performed beautifully. Outdoor pictures are fantastic. It has been dropped in sand on the beach, caught in a severe rainstorm and used for action shots on water park rides. It is so small you don't even know you have it in your fanny pack. The 3 picture sizes give alot of versatility for group shots. The date feature on the front of photos is great for later album organizaton. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Combination of Features and Quality   February 13, 2003

If you are considering buying an APS camera, then you should look no further. Note, however, that APS film is a bit more expensive than regular 35mm film, but it is much more versatile (standard Normal, Group, and Panoramic modes, etc). The reason why this camera so great is most obviously its design. The case is waterproof as well as shockproof. After taking it with me hiking, I tripped three times, each time with the camera in my hand (in its little case), and showed no signs of damage, and still worked great underwater. For me, this is great, as I usually end up losing things in my messy room, and hence they usually get banged around. This camera is durable, and therefore there is no worry. Its waterproofing is great feature, as I am constantly taking pictures on my boat, at the beach, or outside where there is always the chance of rain. You don't have to worry about keeping your camera dry, nor does it become a problem if you leave you bag with the camera in it someplace where it might accidentally get wet. The design is extremely easy to use, and the pictures are great (use 400 speed film, its the most versatile). The only bad thing is that you have to fairly responsible about cleaning the camera after salt-water use. Now, I have never done this, and the camera still works fine. Furthermore, this thing is tiny, suprisingly smaller than the most compact 35mm's. You'll be suprised at how small it is (it's not too small though). It also has bumps on the back to help you grip the camera with one hand. To anyone who is concerned about zoom, on most compact camera, APS or 35mm, they barely make that much of a difference. And to anyone considering going digital, I say just get a scanner. Your picture quality will be much better. Recommended without reservation. Its the kind of camera you can just throw in your bag and never have to worry about. One last thing, when you first put it underwater, you will see bubbles coming out. I was concerned, but found out it was just air on the outside of the waterproofing.

This thing is wild! I have had this camera for the last two months, and cannot put it down! Living in Cleveland Ohio, I was allway's afraid of our violent weather situations to take the camera with me. This camera now follow's me wherever I may go! Fishing, Sled riding, or to the beach.

Picture quality is allmost as good as my Nikon 35mm! Buy it you will love it! Jessica Ballas
