Product Description
What if someone invented a really tiny camera with really huge features? Someone has. It's called the Canon ELPH 490Z, the world's smallest 4x power zoom camera. The 490Z combines the amazing technology of Advanced Photo System with advanced photographic capabilities and full automation. The first camera of its size to offer a high-performance lens with a wide-zoom ratio, the 490Z conceals its incredible 22.5-90mm 4x zoom lens behind a swing-open cover. The dramatic effect does not end there: all of this innovation comes wrapped in sleek styling and beautiful metallic finish of an ultra-compact, aluminum body that's really hard to miss.

Amazon.com Product Description
This remarkably small 4x zoom Advanced Photo System camera is the first of its size to offer a high-performance lens with a wide zoom ratio. The Elph 490Z conceals its 22.5-90mm 4x zoom lens behind a swing-open cover and retains the "box and circle" construction of the original Elph, making it compact and nearly flat with the lift-up lens cover closed. The Elph 490Z is 40 percent smaller in volume and 20 percent lighter than the Sure Shot Z135, the most similar previous Canon model in terms of zoom ratio. It fits in almost any shirt pocket and weighs less than 11 ounces. Despite the Canon Elph 490Z's diminutive stature, its aluminum body feels sturdy.

The Canon Elph 490Z offers completely automatic operation and features a five-mode automatic flash with red-eye reduction, five-point hybrid Ai-AF Smart Autofocus, automatic film transport with drop-in loading, and a self-timer function. It also features Canon's exclusive Best Shot Dial, which offers six different shooting modes. The Best Shot Dial automatically combines several possible function settings to render ideal camera settings for specific types of shooting conditions and subject matter. The user simply sets the Best Shot Dial to the desired shooting mode, and the Elph 490Z takes care of everything else.

Another highlight of the Canon Elph 490Z is its parallax-compensation viewfinder. Since point-and-shoot cameras have a separate viewfinder and lens, often there is a significant difference (called parallax) between the viewfinder field and the actual image area captured by the lens during close-up photography. The Elph 490Z's automatic parallax-compensation function shifts the entire viewfinder image to compensate for this difference.

The Canon Elph 490Z, like all APS cameras, offers three print formats as well as date imprinting, caption options, and IX capabilities. While it does not offer midroll change, it does include midroll rewind.

Canon backs this camera with a one-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Camera!   July 12, 2000

I bought the Canon Elph 490Z to use on my trip to Europe. While abroad, this camera was incredible. The Canon Elph 490Z is very tiny and lightweight (about 11 oz.), so I didn't hesitate about carrying this camera everywhere I traveled. Also, the camera's aluminum body handled very well during the trip; there were no breakage or scratches. Furthermore, the features of this camera were great. The 4x zoom lens enabled me to capture distant objects, while the parallax compensation viewfinder allowed me to more accurately capture objects up close. I developed 15 rolls of film from this camera. The photos look crisp and colorful, and there was no red eye in the ones with family and friends. I definitely recommend the Canon Elph 490Z!

4 out of 5 stars Everything You Want in your APS compact Zoom Camera!   June 14, 2000

This is a very well designed and compact camera. The Elph's well designed size allows it to fit anywhere, (i.e. handbag, pocket, and glovebox) easily and effectively. Therefore, you want to carry it more, and take far too many pictures. As a result, of Cannon using APS technology greatly enhances the clearity of the pictures, along with the additional processing price as well. The "H" setting or HGTV angle Cannon uses though greatly distorts the edges of picture, one is taking. Lastly, another negative I have encountered is the length of life the Lithium (Expensive) battery has a short life.

In spite of some of Elph's shortcomings, I am planning on purchasing a 2nd Elph for my mother, since it is a very convinent and easy to use device.
